Andrew Wilson, the Arist
My interests include improv, drawing, and gardening. As a child, I really enjoyed drawing cartoons and writing creative stories. One of several cartoon characters I created is Piggy Oink, a spherical shaped pig with a mischievous attitude. I have a copyright on this character and hope to someday write stories and create animations with Piggy Oink at the center!
When I have an opportunity to have some free time, I usually like to draw characters like Piggy Oink or sketch out new characters and mythological creatures. I am also training bonsai which I find fascinating, challenging, and rewarding because you can watch your trees grow over time and can manipulate their shape, giving the illusion that they’re much older. I also like to create 3D animations. In a class I took a few years ago, my task was to create an underwater environment and animate a submarine to navigate it. My completed animation had one submarine approach an enemy submarine and fires a torpedo at it, blowing it up.
Since I like to draw in pencil, my work tends to be colorless. When I do use colors, I like to use very specific colors to express what message I want my viewers to see. I frequently use dark colors like grey, black, dark purple and dark blue and bright colors like yellow, orange, red, bright blue and bright green.
I love to draw simple 2 dimensional shapes and characters like stick figures and Piggy Oink to tell stories. When I’m in the planning stage to design and create an art piece for a friend or relative, I tend to focus more on drawing complex 3 dimensional shapes to plan out what I will sketch, how I will sketch it, and what colors I will use to color it.
In my digital work, I tend to focus on the environment, nature, and history. My best work happens when I have a deep personal understanding and connection to my product. I’m fascinated with shapes, colors, and textures from nature and I often get ideas from observing them to create my artwork.
As an artist, I want my viewers to be able to relate to and enjoy the artwork I have created. More specifically, I hope viewers take the time to watch “Bugs In My Backyard.” Perhaps, as a result, more people will have a better appreciation for nature and the world of insects around them.
Bonus video! Here's the submarine.... Enjoy!
